This just in: Smiling makes you feel happier and more energized!

SmilingLast week, I filmed the video segments for Meditation 101. Now if you’ve ever seen yourself on video, you know it’s kind of an adjustment! We look different to the world and on film than we imagine. And, as we’ve been editing the footage, I noticed something striking. When I am intently concentrating on something, I stop smiling. In fact, I can look pretty dour — like the farmer’s wife in the painting “American Gothic” even thought I’m not thinking unhappy thoughts.

Yikes, I thought. Am I the only one who does this? So I started watching people in stores and restaurants…and lo and behold, they were doing the same thing.

I tried an experiment last week … walking around with a smile on my face, for no particular reason whatsoever. And you know what? The research is right! Smiling actually makes you happier. I sailed through each day, feeling happier, more energized and more content even in situations that didn’t really warrant being blissfully happy. So I’ve decided to continue my smiling experiment because it’s just plain fun. See … I’m smiling even now!

Have a happy, smiling day!

Jennifer
